Orchis papilionacea (LINNAEUS) ssp. messenica

Το υποείδος αυτό περιορίζεται στην νότια Πελοπόννησο (Μεσσηνία, Λακωνία) και έχει πυκνή ταξιανθία και λευκά άνθη με ιώδεις γραμμές. Ανθίζει αργά, κατά το δεύτερο 15θήμερο του Απριλίου. Μάλιστα, μερικές φορές, στις ίδιες τοποθεσίες, η ssp. messenica ανθίζει αργότερα από την τυπική Orchis papilionacea, αφού η δεύτερη έχει ήδη ξεραθεί (προσωπική παρατήρηση του James Mast de Maeght).
This subspecies has restricted distribution to southern Peloponnisos (Messinia and Lakonia counties) and is characterized by the white flowers with the purple veins and the dense infloresence. It has a late flowering time, during the second fortnight of April. Sometimes, in the same biotopes, ssp. messenica flowers later that the typical form of Orchis papilionacea, while the latter has already dried out (personal observation of James Mast de Maeght).
