Είδος που πρόσφατα χώρισε από την Ophrys mammosa. Χαρακτηρίζεται από το μεγάλο μήκος του χείλους (16-20 χιλιοστά έναντι 12-17 χιλιοστών του Ophrys mammosa) και από την ωχρογάλαζη ή γκρίζα κηλίδα με λευκό περιθώριο στο έδαφος της στιγματικής κοιλότητας. Παρουσιάζεται με δύο μορφές, η μία με επίμηκες, στενό και κυρτωμένο χείλος (όπως στην διαφάνεια Νο1-3) και η άλλη με ευρύ χείλος (όπως στις διαφάνειες Νο4-7). Εξαπλώνεται στην ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα, ενώ πρόσφατα βρέθηκε από τον Kreutz και στην Κύπρο και φύεται στα ίδια μέρη με την Ophrys mammosa αλλά περίπου ένα μήνα αργότερα, δηλαδή Μάιο-Ιούνιο.
Σημείωση: Τα φυτά Νο 4-7 παρουσιάζουν ιδιαίτερη ποικιλομορφία στον χρωματισμό του χείλους και των σεπάλων-πετάλων όπως και στο σχέδιο του θυρεού. Προέρχονται από περιοχή με υψόμετρο 1200-1350μ και ανθίζουν αρκετά όψιμα. Λόγω του μήκους του χείλους (μερικά έχουν χείλος μεγαλύτερο των 20mm) και της χαρακτηριστικής κηλίδας στο έδαφος της στιγματικής κοιλότητας (φυτό Νο4) θεωρείται ότι αντιπροσωπεύουν Ophrys hystera.
Species recently divided from Ophrys mammosa. It is discriminated by its long lip (16-20 mm while Ophrys mammosa's lip is 12-17mm long) and by the blue-grey spot of the stigmatic cavity floor, which is surrounded by a white marginal line. It has two variants, one with very convex, longitudinal lip (as you may see in slide No1-3) and one with "normal" spread out lip (as you may see in slides No4-7). It is spreading through continental Greece, while recently it was found by Kreutz in Cyprus. It grows in the same habitats as Ophrys mammosa, but about one month later, on May-June.
Notes: The plants No 4-7 are showing great variability in the lip and sepals-petals coloration as in the macula design. They come from a location with an altitude of 1200-1350m and flower quite on the late. As they have big lips (some have lip lengths slightly greater than 20mm) and the characteristic spot of stigmatic cavity floor (plant No4), it is considered that they represent Ophrys hystera.
